With the remake of Alice in Wonderland, many people have become reacquainted with the Mad Hatter. Johnny Depp portrayed him in the latest movie, and had a wonderful costume.

Indeed!  Perhaps you need to be mad as a hatter to survive ON earth!

The phrase "mad as a hatter" is thought to come from the fact that hat makers back in the 18th and 19th century used mercury in the production of felt, which was used in the manufacturing of hats common of the time. These hatters were exposed every day to trace amounts, but mercury accumulates in the body and damages the nervous system. Because of the dementia caused by mercury poisoning amoung hatters, it because common to use the phrase "Mad as a Hatter" as a way to refer to someone who was perceived as insane.
